Ancient Babylonian Gods and the One, True God

Wednesday, October 7, 2009

The following excerpts are from essays written by my students for a final exam. I thought they were noteworthy and wanted to post them.
The essay question was to compare and contrast ancient Babylonian gods with the one, true God.

"...They both interact with humans by living with them. Our God lives with us. The Babylonian and pagan gods only show themselves if they want something. The people even believed that their kings were gods. They interact with themselves by talking to one another. Our God is triune and that's how he interacts. The Babylonian gods interact with one another in council."

"...There are many differences between the Babylonian gods and the one and only God of Israel. One of the many ways they're different is God punishes for reasons such as the people being wicked or sinful. The Babylonian gods punished the people for stupid reasons such as the people being noisy or not sacrificing enough. Another difference between the true God and the impostors is God is three in one; He is Father, Son and Holy Spirit."

"...The Babylonian gods...are selfish, and they say one thing and do another....Our God, on the other hand, is loving and just. He is always fair and is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. He made the world and does things how He sees fit. Some people may say that He is selfish for glorifying Himself, but He is not. He has a right to glorify Himself; He is worthy of it...He can never let anything be swept under the rug. He has to punish sin. You might think that when He has to punish sin it's not fair for Christians to get away with stuff, but we don't. Our sin has already been punished through Christ."

"...The Babylonian gods are...childlike and selfish. They don't really like people...They don't even get along with each other. They aren't on the same page as one another and one might do one thing and the other do something else. Our God...is triune; He is one, so there is no confusion."

JC laws were laws enacted to enforce prejudice in our country. They were passed during the latter half of the 1800's. For example, laws that required African American individuals to attend different schools than other Americans. Does that help?
