The Grey Area of Disobedience

Tuesday, January 19, 2010

Wrong is wrong and right is right, right? Consider the actions of Eowyn and Merry as they venture into battle against the commands of King Theoden. Their courage and bravery pull them into battle even though they must disobey their King in the act. However, their disobedience pays off mightily as Eowyn and Merry accomplish a great feat in the battle. But were they still wrong to go?

Consider the context of the Battle of the Pelennor fields and Merry and Eowyn's role (eh hem...I mean Dernhelm). How should we view their disobedience and rebellion? Are those words too strong to describe their actions? Is it ever right to disobey when courage is the foundation for certain actions? What about other motives? Hunger? Sacrifice? Selflessness?

Discuss these questions and respond to two other posts. Be thoughtful and write intelligently! :)

I think that Eowyn and Merry were wrong to disobey their authority, just like God is our authority, we should obey him, and they should have done the same. I do admit that they did pay off in the battle, though. (:

Every thing that happens, happens because God wills them to happen no matter what our part in it is. I once read something(or heard it) along the lines of this-God lets catastrophes happen so that He can bring us through them victoriously and we would glorify Him. As to what we should-its a judgment call. If they would have stayed the Nazgul would have killed off the Riders of Rohan, finished off Gondor, come to Rohan. Since they went, the Nazgul leader was defeated and the Riders of Rohan held off the orcs until Aragorn arrived

I agree with Kenzo and how she said that they should have listened. But i think that maybe i might be wrong that maybe they saw something in them selfs that made them do what they did. Also i think that at that very moment it was either lose thier lifes and everyone elses or maybe lose just one of them and save the whole army. Merry was very brave to kill the Nazgul and I think that Eowyn is just the most be awesome person i have ever read about!!!

I agree kenzo, i think they should not have disobeyed an authority. We need to respect those whom God has placed in authority over us! I know they were thinking they need to save their friend, but he was already dead, plus both of them almost died! So I say they should have obeyed.
